Synopsis:
After the mega-Armageddon-record snowfall year in the Sierra (4th-5th snowiest on record?), the days of lift-served have come to a close. Many of the Tahoe resorts opened for the July 4th weekend, but we figured Kirkwood would be 1) less crowded, 2) more North facing, 3) consistent pitch, & 4) The Cirque! Even better, I was able to pick up and use my 11/12 season pass….with the solstice over, its just getting darker every day, right?
Ultimately, Kirkwood opened up Chair 6 with skiers carrying their skis/boards and no grooming or frill. Surprisingly, that didn’t stop the better than expected turnout with a ‘skiers in shorts’ ratio of 91.7%. Skiing was only a few yards from being ‘top to bottom’ skiing, and I bet if they snow farmed a bit, they would have been able to fill in the holes without any issue. All in all, skiing from near Glove Rock all the way to Carnell’s was superb skiing for July 2nd. People were hiking the Wall to the Palisades….GOOD DAY INDEED!
July 4th isn’t very common…just look at this shot from ‘a patch’ on Forestdale Creek Road July 4th’s 2007….let me know if you can determine any difference between that year and this past season….

July 2nd, 2011:
Just a normal alpine start for a ski trip on July 2nd….

Time for some healthy food for hiking…

The skis managed to see the sun first…

We brought along some fog from SF…

Spur is finally melting…

Albeit, Winter is still lingering

Jmetzler wears his thickest down coat…

I think that’s a human gesture for approval…

‘Lookout Janek’ looking filled in…

On the Summit, we are greeted by soldiers like Skimoore’s dad, Moment SkiEO’s dad, and other various fathers…

JMetzler wastes no time in making his first turn…

Zach’s wasn’t groomed but skied very well…

666 makes a few turns….

He’s just happy he’s rolling on 916s instead of Dukes….

Coop and I try to look professional..

JMetzler goes for some edge cleaning…

666 attempts to hurt himself in July…

Ottime gets into the action shot steeze…

Coop enjoying himself….I think it was only his 3rd day skiing this season. ☺

JMetzler follows his line…

Meanwhile, 666 tries for a July face shot…

…and then JMetzler pretends we are at NASTAR…

We meet up with Dblatto and decide to venture past the WALL!!!!

Ottime and I really bonded on the hike…

The hike was a tad far for ski boots but whatever….

Dblatto loves getting fresh air anyway…#freshair

#permanatelyclosed….

Sierra to the South from 9800ft…..

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA! WE LOVE YOU SOOOOO MUCH!

Are you telling me that he brought props?

I mean….REALLY??????

I guess he marked Carnell’s for us…

The line….even better is that IT GOES!

JMetzler just got back from a trip in Hawaii, so he HAD to go first…

Not too bad for July!

Those lessons are really paying off!

Dblatto makes his first ever Cirque turn…#Kirkwoodcirqueisopen

Hella #STOKED!

Ottime is up in the flag gate….

And decides to CHARGE IT!

Dblatto heads down the couloir….#skiinginJuly

Ottime follows his line…

And hauls ass into the crux…

666 decides to chase after Ottime…

This is what it looked like…

GO DARON RAHLVES!!!!!!

666POV…

Perfect corn for a bbq…

JMetzler shows us the lower section….

I decided to take the same line…

Getting a bit narrow…

Dblatto shows us why ‘rocker technology’ is also great for…suncupps! #rockertechnology

JMetzler pretends its groomed…

Ottime skis so fast, it stresses me out…..

Eagle Bowl finish line….

Dblatto goes powder huntin’….#dirtskiing

And just like that, we arrive at the Base to drink talboys with Slim and DaveP…

Our line is visible…

Now hydrated, Slim shows us Oops still has coverage…

I really hope JMetzler applied sunscreen on his arms…

Did I mention Oops was SMOOTH?

Lower Oops….JMetzler laughing due to fun or the 4am pickup in Berkeley hours earlier?

You could even make that last carve down to 6 from Sentinel….crazy for July 2nd!

I guess Big Jims was ‘doable.’

Dblatto on #skischoolchute…

#smoothskiing….

666 leapfrogs holes….

Over to the chute near Glove rock for my final run…

Yay! Its sunny in SF!!!!!

Music: FRESH – GATEKEEPER
Synopsis:
The storms dropped another 20 feet or so since my last blog…
The wife and I decided to book a room with the little guy due to the interlodge scenerio the previous weekend’s road closures. I was able to ski the morning pow, ski with the little guy, and then go back out to slay as much as possible. The following weekend, the heat took its toll on the snow. Sun and an inversion created water runnels even at the top of Thunderbowl. The snow was so slow and sticky that it may have been the ‘worst snow ever on skis’, yep, no joke. However, its been about 5 years since we’ve been able to make turns down the slash chute past V-tree in thunderbowl.
Java Porn: Diet Rock Star & some chocolate covered coffee beans

March 20-22nd, 2011:
Look at that storm…it’s a damn hurricane!

Made it a little tough to grab a Peets coffee in the Marina…

But as the clouds lifted, Mild.bill was ready to huck his meat (see pov)

Then S.P.C decided to land in the bombhole..ouch!

S.P.C heads over to Kodak…

March 25-27th 2011:
On the last weekend of March, the family and I decided to drive up to the ‘snow’….as in Placerville at 1800ft….ha

Hwy 50 was between storms…

But sure didn’t lack the BASS near Sierra…

At lake level, the boats were hating life…

At least I didn’t have to mow the grass back there…

The next day on Chair 6….I was lined up for a decent chair.

My first lap was OK….

The second was eh….

Third lap, Oops is almost too filled in at this point….

But some interesting lines popped up…

Then the Wall opened….first time in 10 feet or so…..

Yeah, it was good. Even if I was solo….

The chair was only opened for 3 laps…

I then migrated to Chair 1 to ride with this guy…

He did well for his first storm skiin’ day…

….but he insisted on Chairs 9 & 7, so we slayed those as well.

After a KW Inn dinner, we took a drive up the Spur…

The next morning it looked like this out of my window….

And this…

Supu made a dirty appearance…

He skied some Upper Cham pow…

Dhklauer made an appearance…

Mogul5480 turned where I wasn’t expecting…

Over to Dan’s for pow….

Supu carves out some stress…

666 jumps into that new zone again…

And then over by Olympic….

The Wall opens so I headed down toward Eagle and then cut over to Waterfall…

Waterfall was fun…

And a final run with first tracks down Norm’s…

And then back over near Chair 7 corduroy….

After another Kirkwood Inn meal, it was time to break out the good camera for the Carson Spur shots on the departure back to reality land…

Make sure you honk around this turn…

Weekend ending on April 3rd:
Our ‘groomer started with Upper Cham, where mild.bill got aggressive…

He’s still with us…

At this point, they might as well groom it….

Next up, time to make ‘turns’ down Once is Enough…

I think it measured as a quad black diamond…

I followed with an ‘air turn’…

mild.Bill found a random balloon but I refused to accept it…

Over to Waterfall zone….in craptastic snow.

Its finally time to rock Slash Chute in CHUNDERBOWL…

Its been a while….previous attempts were:
(click pics for TR)
2005:
And…..
2006: Lowest snow conditions attempt for me, even had to air out…ugh
And later in that year….
With a strong inversion, we almost bailed on the line until we saw a safe shitty snow entrance on skiers right…

After some wet slough management over exposure, mild.bill drops into the gut…

OMG its 2011 and a POV still ACTUALLY INSIDE the chute!!!!

Thanks mild.bill for scraping the good snow off….

Alright, its time to regroup and attempt some turns….

Scott Schmidt eat your heart out!

This just proves that snow looks better in pics than they actually ski, so Powder magazine, I’ve got your number…

Yep, a crevasse at Kirkwood…

We survived ‘Grand Master Headband’…..

Slush postholing all the way back up to Palisades was so fun!!!!

Cue Kool in the Gang…

Ugh….dark clounds combined with warmth equals……….

Perfectly timed departure, rain, graupel and a car full of sweaty men all the way back to SF

This is a story about skiing throughout the sidecountry of Kirkwood, the chutes of the Hall of the Gods, a sleeper pow day at Kirkwood, and a quick trip to gator and flamingo country
It was also the week of Charlie Sheen. Let us never forget. Duh…WINNER! No warlocks or Trolls in this TR…
Java Porn: Mmmmmmm…3 days of 7-Eleven’s finest!

March 4th, 2011:
I departed San Francisco a tad late with a 6am departure…

But made good time into the foothills where I stopped to take a picture of the Earth

But I arrived to ski the Spur untracked…

666 makes a few turns….

As luck would have it, Powdork had the same idea….

It was horrible…

He had to cross too many tracks…

Untracked schmears are boring…

Powdork enjoying his run….

Here, he descends down the mogul course…

666 skis through the sierra cement….

666 then takes a couple laps in bounds….Norm’s Nose:

Oops EP…..

A meet up with Skiin’ Ian led to a tour near Cali Chutes….

I made a pee, phone call, and drank a Red Bull here…

To the Southwest

To the Southeast…

We decided to ski the Headwall prior to Cali Chutes….

Skiin’ Ian leaves some room for the 6’er…..

Man, it was good….

So good, it warranted noodling….

My POV….

The damage….

Time to hike over to Pipeline….

It was good in there too…

Skiin’ Ian enjoys the sport of skiing….

666 had fun in the powder…

The zone is that rocky bit in the distance…

Near Lake Tahoe, winter had her grip on the boating community…

March 5th, 2011:
‘Act as a leaf and fall into this lake, and pow turns will be had’ – a wise man once said…..

Sierra Cement, Gimpy and I head up while contemplating a hotwire….

The journey was mixed with ice, sugar snow, and sweat…

Up and up we go….

We approach some gnar….

Sierra Cement thinking about….yep…donuts.

Our first line encompassed Main Halls with no tracks….

666 went down a tad to take a few photos…

Not too ‘slabby’…

Gimpy provides avalanche testing…

Sierra Cement getting hella extreme…

666 approaches the choke…

From his point of view….

…and continues onward….

Sierra Cement goes next but refuses to stop….

Do you blame him?

Gimpy follows suit…

And exits out of the bottom…

666 survives as well….thank god it’s a blue run.

Another round?

Desolation Wilderness looking phat….

I believe this is :Lake Tahoe but I could be very wrong….

A very very very large cliff looking down towards death…

Our previous line…

On the Angora side, we take a few turns before heading to the Fallen Angel area….

Sierra Cement knows what to do…

Gimpy loves to ski as well…

666 descends a boring pow face….

Needs more ice for carving…..

Near Fallen angel, Sierra Cement takes a GS line….

A little variable in here, but all around great fun…

Gimpy enjoyed himself…how do I know? He gave me a hug at the bottom.

Later that afternoon, I headed out to KW to witness MildBill making a turn into Once in Enough…

Success…

After all the hiking earlier in the day and being a bit bored with steep skiing, I decided to take a nap on top of hospital air…

Steven S Dallas flames through Sisters Chute…

…even busted out a wall slash!

Guess the meat…

March 6th, 2011:
It wouldn’t be a skiing day in 2011 without driving on snow…

At the parking lot, the 4-6 inches looks more like 14 inches….

Open before 9am? No WAY!!!!!!!

MildBill ollies into Upper Cham….

666 takes the easy way in….

Not only is he sexy in pink, SSD is actually a damn fine skier…

mmmm….powder skiing….

That’ right, get after it boy!

Fun times…

Sleeper pow is always fun….

Damn snow….

Lower-outer-Palisades…

That damn snow again…

Thunder Saddle opened, so time to jump off stuff…(opposite of Kodak)

And a little ‘one man chute’ I believe…(near Soul Searcher/Tremans)

One last run off the side of Oops and lower Cham…

March 9th, 2011:
And then a couple days later, its off to Naples, Florida! Wahoooo!

Gator country…

…and beach camo-lizards

and white sandy beaches….

Hop came along but he’s underwater taking pics of that thing…

Some golf happened…

March 14th, 2011:
And an early Monday morning direct flight to SFO across alligator alley…

Flew over the San Juans where the Red Bull Cold Rush 2011 was happening…(you can see Telluride in the photo)

…and of course, the Central Sierra
…and it continues to snow at time of publishing…

Oh yeah, first time on Chair 9 baby!

We’re both pretty stoked…

‘Dad, I want to go in there!’….’Ummm, son, its frozen solid’….’I don’t care.’

‘Yep, that’s right, I fucking killed chairs 7 & 9, and no, I didn’t ski in these sweats, keep walking….’

When will California fix these damn levees?

January 29th, 2011:
Next, we headed up to Squaw and Northstar…as luck would have it, it ended up snowing a foot or so after the heat wave….

I can do this…

February 1st-7th, 2011:
Took a commercial airline to Hawaii. Oahu to be exact. This is how to travel with kids…

Here’s some shots above Lani Kai beach…

So artsy….

My wife is too fast for me….

Scenic.

Such an ugly beach…

I fell down in there….only suffered a broken brain.

Don’t tell him that those are knock-off Ray Ban’s.

When then spent a few days soaking in the sun on Lane Meyer’s home island, Lanai. Here’s a sunset.

Yes, I fell off that ladder…

Very close to snow in San Francisco…

Dblatto said it was snowing in Napa…here’s proof:

Yep, California for ya’…

Dblatto skiing aggressively…

DaveP goes for huck neck…

Mach Looney? Hard to tell….but its still cool.

Just a little bit of snow…

I left my car over there. No wait, over there….

Hard to take pics on a powder day, so here are some POV stills to prove it was good…

The snow flew around…

Ahhhhhh, all praise Caltrans for the shuttle over the Spur!

After being shuttled through to Silver Lake over the Spur, this guy couldn’t find his keys…gosh.

Pleasant surroundings…

Avoiding traffic, 666 took three major bridges to get home…

The next morning, it was chilly but crisp…

Kinda weird to see snow when you wake up in SF….

We then headed to the Academy of Sciences in GG Park, this cheetah’s meal was interrupted by my son banging on the window…

Real Penguins! Woot!

Jellyfish steeze….

February 24th – February 27th, 2011:
666 takes a nap after the long drive to Crystal Bay from SF with DaveP…

We awoke to find out it barely snowed in the 4 hours that we were asleep…

Driving around Truckee was fun..

Yay, time to go skiing…

With all these jokers? Ugh….

Music: Loadstar – ‘Link to the Past’
Synopsis:
With reports coming in that it rained to extremely high elevations just a day prior, and with two days to do whatever we wanted, we figured we should attempt to ski something above 10,000 ft. That’s where Round Top came into play. Unfortunately, only the upper 3rd of the Moon Crescent had wintry snow.
After a morning of hiking, we zipped over to Kirkwood, where sun, beers, and softening snow blew our minds. The next day followed suit.
Java Porn: Lines are getting out of control at the South Lake Starbucks, so sometimes you have to go old school…

Trip to the Moon!:
What a better way to spend a Friday night than driving to the snow…

A little fossil fuel cam…

Not really a dawn patrol, not really an Alpine start…but cool nonetheless…

It may be warm, but there’s still some snow hanging around…

I think the coffee is wearing thin…

Now if they would only plow our skin track…

Its not really that far is it??????

S.P.C is killing it on his first skin ascent…

Our line comes into view…unlike the way it did in the last photo…

S.P.C reconsidering his late night skin cutting session…or should I say ‘early morning skin cutting session?’….

Skier666 heads up to check the snow conditions at the bottom of the chute to decide to hike around or up the damn thing. Yes, we walked around…

This was as close as ‘powder’ we got….

Up and around the bend, its time for a push to the summit…

Yippie! Ice, scree, and sheer drops to the South!

S.P.C decided that this was scenic and all but a little too sketchball…

JMetzler makes the push…

False summit 2011…

WE MADE IT! SO ski mountainery of us!

Oooooo pretty pictures…..to the Southwest

To the South…

I should have gone to art school…

A lake…

The Moon Crescent from the summit…JMetzler decided it wasn’t the best line to try out his new Dynafit setup, so I jumped in…

Looks so incredibly fun!

Not so fun…

This is better….WINTER SNOW!

Ok, time to do some skiing…

Doesn’t look so bad from here….

JMetzler rips down the corduroy….

S.P.C finds a ribbon of GREATNESS back towards the car…

SUCCESS!

Off to Kirkwood. Might as well hit the Extreme Traverse…just don’t trip.

Above Ski School skied well…

Same for Sisters Chute…

Nice afternoon looking West…

Back at Bub’s….Irony set in…

The next morning, Skimoore carves down Norm’s Nose…

I ollied his markings…

And then we are off to a hidden stash…

S.P.C. heads downhill…

JMetzler finds a SECRET chute…

I think it goes…

Skimoore came from Paris just for this run…

S.P.C is the next customer…

bye bye…

666 goes for it…

West Shore was looking prime for wetslide activity, I think not hitting freezing the night before played a role in that one….

Temple of Doom tried to swallow Skimoore but failed to do so…

He then migrated to Hells….

We soon met up with Gerome and crew on Chamois…

A run over to the Fingers…

Gerome rolls into Once…my little camera fails to focus…

Down here?

666 follows the big monkey…

Good times…

Its not really 50F at the 8,000 ft is it?

…Even colder at 500 feet…

Cows were stoked…

But cleared up on a bridge over the Bay…

And I thought Moon Crescent was narrow…

We actually skipped SF and made it to China…yet, in record time.

And I had another birthday…yep, I’m 12!

see ya’

TR’s force me to edit digital pictures born out of digital cameras. Whether from my cell phone to a DSLR, I take pictures of stuff, and they sit in folders as data. You see, for some reason, I’m not on Facebook. So what shall I do with all these crappy images?
Here are some shots from the Fall of 2010 through present day. A lot has happened since September 9th, 2010. Not only is that the Dreamcast’s 11th anniversary, but it provided a starting point to this blog.
Snow came early, then melted off a bit, then came back strong, and well, made history with Mammoth receiving 13 feet of snow in 4 days to be claimed the ‘snowiest place on Earth.’
I finally ventured out after Thanksgiving just to tumble through rocks, lose a POV cam, and to tweak my back only after 5 runs. After a solid 2 weeks of rehab (beer), I ventured over Carson Spur to a place called Kirkwood on Dec 17th. The Spur of Hwy 88 closed for days after the crossing with my cat Lola and myself. The storm came in cold, then wet, and then finished cold again. As it turned out, I was able to score the awesome middle part….lucky me.

Java Porn: Yep, caffeine and trance….

TR can now begin:
Off to the Hamptons for a post Labor Day wedding…perfect weather…

Sexy $22 cocktails mmmmmmm…….

My photography gets hella crazy after that cocktail…

I think there was a wedding at a winery….

Followed by a nice flight home over the Central Sierras….

Back in SF, blue colored, extremely quiet, jets scare the living crap out of all the humans….

Take the kid to the toxic beach?

On my roof, I finally noticed that I actually live on Hwy 101….

Giants go to the World Series, so Shugs takes me to my first and only game of the year…ha
